Quick Answers

What is the difference between markup and margin?

Markup is how much you add on top of your cost. Margin is how much of the final price you keep. A $100 cost marked up 30% sells for $130 — but your margin is only 23%, because $30 is 23% of $130.

Why does this matter for my business?

Many owners add a markup equal to the margin they want. That always leaves them short. Over a year, that gap can cost thousands in lost profit.

How is the price calculated?

Price = Job Cost ÷ (1 − Overhead % − Profit %). For example, $11,000 in costs with 15% overhead and 15% profit: $11,000 ÷ 0.70 = $15,714.

How do I find my overhead percent?

Add up last year's overhead costs (rent, office staff, insurance, trucks, software, marketing). Divide by last year's total revenue. Most trade businesses land between 10% and 25%.

What profit percent should I aim for?

Most healthy trade businesses aim for 10% to 20% net profit. Higher-risk or specialty work should aim higher.
